The Passing of Dallas Willard Today at Age 77

Dallas Willard

“The world can no longer be left to mere diplomats, politicians, and business leaders. They have done the best they could, no doubt. But this is an age for spiritual heroes- a time for men and women to be heroic in their faith and in spiritual character and power. The greatest danger to the Christian church today is that of pitching its message too low.”

“A common element of temptation is the allegation that God has failed to provide for our needs so we had better grab what we can for ourselves.”

The Hidden Life

“God seems to delight in putting the reputations of his servants on the line. Noah had to build an ark on dry land, Moses had to toss his staff down before Pharaoh, and Joshua had to march Israel into the Jordan River. Each of these men had to lay down his reputation and trust God to lift it up again. God always maintains the reputations of His servants, although He does so on His own schedule.”

“Our longings for love, unity in diversity, communication, community, humility, peace, and selflessness are in fact–by design–longings for the Trinitarian God of the Bible and a world that is a reflection of the Trinity.”

“The Trinity is the first community and the ideal for all communities.  That community alone has not been stained by the selfishness of sin.  Therefore, in the diversity of God the Father, Son, and Spirit is perfect unity as one God that communicates truthfully, loves unreservedly, lives connectedly, serves humbly, interacts peaceably, and serves selflessly.  In a word, the Trinity is the ideal community in every way.”

Just Downloaded (For Free!) On My Kindle

unfriend yourselfI love downloading free books on my Kindle.  This one looked interesting today.  Pretty ironic that I post it in the context of social media.

Here’s my question:  Does social media draw you closer to God?

Should be an interesting read.

When You Are Picked Last

Sweet Victory

This is one of my favorite pictures of all time–not because it is such a great picture, but because of the memory.  We had just moved to California a few weeks before.  Josh (slugging down the A & W and sporting the sweet fighter jet T shirt) was 7.  He was in the early stages of getting acclimated to a new community and seeking out new friends.  We saw an ad for a baseball clinic and showed up not knowing anyone.  He was one of the youngest and definitely the newest–a pretty overwhelming situation for a little guy.  I stayed with him to make sure everything went all right.  It did–until they picked teams for a scrimmage.  My heart broke as Josh waited and waited for someone to pick the new kid.  No one did.  He was picked last.  The game was tied until the very end, when up comes (you guessed it) the kid no one wanted.  With the flair of a Disney-script, Josh drove in the winning run with a smash up the middle.  His smile (and pizza stained face) say it all.  Great memory with my son.

Video

Matthew Dellavedova

My son’s heroes are not superheroes. They are point guards–1. Aaron Craft (OSU); 2. Matthew Dellavedova (Saint Mary’s). Great match-up for Dellavedova tonight against #1 ranked Gonzaga. If you appreciate good point guard play, tune in and enjoy. (Be sure to check out the above video of the game winner against BYU).
